Kalen Douglas DeBoer is an American football coach who is currently the head football coach at the University of Washington.

From 2005 to 2009, DeBoer is the head coach of the football team at the University of Sioux Falls, and from 2020 to 2021, he did the same at California State University, Fresno.

In 2006, 2008, and 2009, his teams at Sioux Falls captured three NAIA Football National Championships.

DeBoer was born and raised in Milbank, South Dakota, and attended Milbank High School. DeBoer played wide receiver for the Sioux Falls Cougars under head coach Bob Young from 1993 to 1996, setting school records for receptions (234), receiving yardage (3,400), and touchdown catches (33) and earning All-American honors.

After his playing career in football ended in 1997, DeBoer worked as a student assistant at Sioux Falls, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education in 1998.

DeBoer also played baseball for Sioux Falls, where in his senior year in 1997. DeBoer participated in one season of independent league baseball in 1998 as a left fielder with the Canton Crocodiles.

Kalen DeBoer Coaching Career

DeBoer stayed in Sioux Falls, South Dakota after earning his degree from the University of Sioux Falls to work as an assistant coach at Washington High School.

DeBoer returned to his Alma institution as the offensive coordinator from 2000 to 2004 after spending two years there with Bob Young.

On December 1, 2004, Sioux Falls elevated DeBoer to head coach following Young’s retirement. DeBoer had a 67-3 record while serving as head coach from 2005 to 2009; his teams won three NAIA national championships in 2006, 2008, and 2009 and finished second in 2007.

DeBoer served as Southern Illinois’ offensive coordinator under Dale Lennon from 2010 to 2013.

He previously held the same role at Eastern Michigan University under Chris Creighton from 2014 to 2016, Fresno State under Jeff Tedford from 2017 to 2018, and most recently Indiana under Tom Allen in 2019.

DeBoer was appointed the football team’s head coach at California State University, Fresno, in 2020.

DeBoer was appointed the University of Washington’s head football coach on November 29, 2021.
