Massive K2 Comet 2022: Closer to Earth For the First Time on Thursday after five years of its discovery, K2 Destiny, Halley’s Comet, All information.
The K2 comet was first heard in 2017 when it was discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope. After five years the comet K2 is about to be closer to the Earth (about 270 million KM) for the first time this year, it cleared its way to the inner Solar System, as per NASA.
What do we know about Massive K2 comet 2022?
Table of Contents
The K2 comet is huge, having a massive nucleus between 18 and 100 miles in width and having a trail of gas and dust behind it around 81000 to 500,000 miles.
Although the K2 comet size is colossal yet is not easy to spot it. This makes it interesting for stargazers as K2 will be closer to earth than ever before.
When and how to view K2 Comet?

The massive K2 Comet 2022 passing closer to Earth does not mean it will be visible to the naked eye, but those who have a decent telescope can take a glimpse of the comet C/2017 K2.
According to Space.com, the ideal time will be 11:09 p.m. EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) on Wednesday, July 13, and Thursday, July 14, 2022, when it will be closest to the Earth.
As for the curious stargazers, July 13, 2022, is also important as it’s the year’s bigger and brighter Super Buck Moon due to the moon coming closer to the Earth in its orbit called perigee.
Why is the K2 not visible to the human eye, being closer to Earth?
As per viewing, even the comet will be closer to the Earth but it will be further away than Mars. The comet K2 will be about magnitude 7 or 8 as far as brightness is concerned and the naked eye can only see the brightness of magnitude 6, as it is said lower the magnitude, the brighter the objects. Due to this, the naked human eye cannot catch a glimpse of the comet.
Despite that, a small personal telescope can flawlessly help to view the comet at night.
Hacks to Watch Massive K2 Comet 2022
If you don’t have a telescope, not to worry, as there will be livestreaming of the comet. The Virtual Telescope Project is going to stream it on Thursday at 18:15 ET. Here.
What are Comets?
Comets are vast, made of ice and rock that drift in the Solar System. They can be recognized by their bright distinctive tail caused due to expelling gas when they heat up by the sun as they come closer to the sun. This show that the comet is active.
Why are Comets interesting to Scientists?
According to Scientists, comets are unblemished leftovers from the early Solar System and can provide important clues related to their origin and also about the universe.
As per scientists, K2 came from a remote distance of the Solar System called as Oort Cloud and it has been on its journey toward the sun, traveling for millions of years.
Destiny of Comet K2
After passing through the Earth, it will head towards the sun in December 2022. According to scientists, K2 will become more active as it gets closer to Sun and will probably form a tail.
The most famous comet, ‘Halley’s Comet’
Halley’s comet, known by the name 1p/Halley, is the shortest periodic comet ever, coming to the Earth domain every 75-79 years. This is the only comet that is visible to the human eye, and a person can see it twice in their lifetime. It was last visited in 1986, and it will be visible again in 2061.
Where is Halley’s Comet now in 2022?
Right now, Halley’s Comet is at the farthest point in its orbit from the sun and is currently in the Hydra Constellation.
