The history behind MTV Video Music Awards
Table of Contents
The MTV Video Music Awards are a ceremony held by the cable network MTV to recognize the best in the music video industry. The yearly MTV Video Music Awards show has been compared to the “Super Bowl for youth” and was initially created as a competition to the Grammy Awards (in the video category).
In 1984, the first MTV Video Music Awards were held, and by 2001, the VMA had grown in prestige.
MTV VMAs 2022 Trophy
One of the earliest depictions of MTV, the trophy awarded to winners is a statue of an astronaut on the moon, sometimes known as a “Moonman”. However, Chris McCarthy, the CEO of MTV, said in 2017 that the statue would henceforth be referred to as a “Moon Person.”
Since the 2006 event, viewers have had the option to vote online for their favorite videos in all general categories.
