Peiter ‘Mudge’ Zatko was born on 1 December, 1970 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States and graduated from the Berklee College of Music at the top of his class. He is an adept guitar player. Mudge was responsible for the early research into the buffer overflow, which is a type of security vulnerability. This type of vulnerability occurs when too much data is sent to a memory buffer, resulting in data corruption or overwriting of sensitive information.

Mudge began his career in the 1990s when he conducted classified work for a government contractor and was a leader of a hacking group called the ‘cult of the dead cow’. The group was known for releasing Windows hacking tools to force Microsoft to improve security.

Mudge was one of seven members of the LOpht who testified about the internet’s serious vulnerabilities before a senate committee in 1998. He later became the vice president of research and development and chief scientist.

He was the security lead at Twitter from November 2020 to January 2022. Before Twitter, he oversaw security at the electronic payments company Stripe. He also worked on special projects at Google and oversaw the distribution of grants for project on cybersecurity projects at the US Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research and Projects Agency (DARPA).
