Marie Louise Cruz, aka Sacheen Littlefeather, is an American actress, model, and Native American civil rights, activist. She was born to a Native American father and a European American mother.

She became involved in the Native American activist community during the 1969 occupation of Alcatraz

At the 45th Academy Awards in 1973, Native American actress Sacheen Littlefeather represented Marlon Brando, who won the Best Actor award for his performance in “The Godfather.” On Brando’s behalf, she declined the best actor award that he won for his performance in the godfather.

Brando was the favorite to win, but he boycotted the ceremony as a protest against Hollywood’s portrayal of Native Americans and to bring attention to the standoff at Wounded Knee.

Littlefeather Early Life

Littlefeather was born as Marie Louise Cruz in Salinas, California, on November 14, 1946. Her mother, Geroldine Marie Barnitz, was a leather stamper from Santa Barbara, California, and her father Manuel Ybarra Cruz was from Oxnard, California.

Both Geroldine and Manuel were in the saddle-making trade. In 1949, they moved to Salinas and started their own business, Cruz Saddlery. After her father died in 1966, her mother continued to run the business.

Littlefeather Education

From 1960-1964, Littlefeather attended North Salinas High School. After high school, she attended Hartnell Junior College and studied Elementary Education. However, in 1969 she decided to move to the San Francisco Bay Area in order to pursue a modeling career – she had a portfolio of photos that had been taken by Kenneth Cook of Cook’s Photography.

Littlefeather Health issues

In her early years when she was little, Feather talked about her troubling experiences with health, like when she had cancer, or when both her lungs collapsed, or when she was bleeding internally. When she was only four, she caught tuberculosis and had to be hospitalized in an oxygen tent.

Littlefeather has been through a lot in her life. In 1991, she was reported to be recovering from radical cancer surgery. In 1999, it was reported that she had had colon cancer in the early 1990s. In 2012, she was reported to be in remission from breast cancer.

However, in March 2018, a spokesperson announced that Littlefeather had developed stage 4 breast cancer. In an interview in mid-2021, Littlefeather said that cancer had spread to her right lung, and she was terminally ill.
