The full moon names used by the Old Farmer’s Almanac come from a number of places, including Native American, colonial American, and European sources. Each full moon name was traditionally applied to the entire lunar month in which it occurred, not solely to the full moon.
August’s full moon is called the Sturgeon Moon because, at this time of year, giant sturgeons are easily caught in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain. Sturgeon are prehistoric-looking fish that have been traced back to around 136 million years ago.
What is a Super Moon?

The moon orbits around Earth in an elliptical or oval-shaped manner, and this causes the distance between Earth and Moon to vary over time. The Moon will be at the closest point to Earth (known as perigee) during the full moon in August, which is why it appears bigger and brighter than usual.
When to watch Sturgeon Moon?
NASA says that the full moon will appear on the east-southeast horizon as evening twilight ends, at 9:11 PM Eastern Time. The moon will be at its fullest (peak illumination) at 9:36 PM Eastern Time. If you look up and to the left of the moon, you will see Saturn just 6 degrees above it.
