Anthony Evers is an American educator and politician who has served as Wisconsin’s 46th governor since 2019. Evers, a Democrat, served as Wisconsin’s Superintendent of Public Instruction from 2009 to 2019.
Evers announced his candidacy for governor of Wisconsin on August 23, 2017, challenging two-term Republican incumbent Scott Walker. Walker was viewed as a weak incumbent and has received criticism for his stance on education.
In August 2018, Evers won the Democratic primary. Former state representative Mandela Barnes won the lieutenant governor primary and will serve as Evers’ running mate. In the general election, they defeated the Scott Walker-Rebecca Kleefisch ticket.

Evers worked as a caregiver in a nursing home as a young adult. He went to Plymouth High School. He received bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Furthermore, he began his professional career in the Tomah school district as a teacher and media coordinator. He was the principal of Tomah Elementary School from 1979 to 1980, and Tomah High School from 1980 to 1984.
Evers was superintendent of the Oakfield school district from 1984 to 1988, and of the Verona school district from 1988 to 1992. He was the administrator of the Cooperative Education Service Agency (CESA) in Oshkosh from 1992 to 2001.

Evers is married to Kathy, his high school sweetheart. They are the parents of three adult children and nine grandchildren. Before undergoing intensive surgery in 2008, Evers had esophageal cancer.
